"CAGED BEAST"

This car was driven by NASCAR Ace Junior Johnson in practice for the 1963 Indy 500. The Kurtis KK500L was the first (and only?) Indy Roadster to be fitted with a roll cage. The car incorporated several innovations for the day, but using a distributor ignition instead of a magneto evidently cost them 75 horsepower vs. the competition, and they didn't quite get the car up to qualifying speed.
