This is my take on the legendary Mercedes Benz 540K, a magnificent beast if there ever was one. The ‘K’ stood for Kompressor, or Supercharger to us.

This car was built and raced in 59, and shows much of the styling direction that came to the public in 1963. Look very closely and you can see the wear and tear of many laps on that silver leather seat!

This is 1964 at the old dirt track at Hillsborough, NC. This painting was done from a photo I took myself with a cheap old Kodak of some kind - no long lens, so I couldn't have been standing very far off that turn. And no one ever came up to me and said "Hey Kid, you can't stand there!'.  And no guard rails... Hence, the title! That's Curtis Crider in the 63 Mercury and Buddy Baker in the 64 Ford.

Lake Pipes - there’s a term for old school car folk. It comes from the open side exhaust on many of the hot rods that ran top speed trials on dry lake beds in the early, formative years of hot rodding.
